MSG Meeting Notes from 2007-Sept-4th

Tom Sharpton: ready to pass the buck on, need volunteers to run the
organization, thinks s in good hands, conveniently there was only one
nomination per position so we t have to vote, but please make more
nominations if you want. Specific Symposium positions will be voted for at
a later time.

Tom Sharpton: We need an A/V person. This s seminar is(was) on
Thursday Wednesdays as usual).  You just have to show up 10 minutes early and plug
things in.  You even get paid $10 a week! Jason Trout can explain to you
how to do it.

Shawna Reed: ll volunteer to do it.

Meetings will be once a month. First week of the month, adjust to
accommodate s GSM profs on .  Can have extra meetings to
have practice talks for qualifying exams and interviews.

Anna Simonin (President of GSM): GSM is held last Monday of the month this
semester

Cameron Thrash: s sign up for talks and food.

Tom Sharpton: I will send instructions to Nhu (written by Jennifer Kyle,
past MSG member) about how to renew the charter, which we have to do every
year.

Food buying (for MSG meetings): budget is $50 per meeting, booze is on donation 

Justin Richner: It is very important to PLEASE pay these two bills (food
and alcohol) separately, go in line to pay twice if you have to, it makes
it a lot easier.

Matt Melnicki: does anyone want to volunteer as a position to get food all
the time, as someone once did for GSM?  (No response, once is enough per
person).

Talks: still need some volunteers (if you want to schedule a talk, please
contact Nhu)

Schedule:
October: Matt Melnicki for talk, Chelsea Witte for food
November: Cameron Thrash for talk, Stephen Smith for food
December: Justin Richner for talk, Kate Williams for food
January: (no one for talk yet), Sergio Covarrubias for food.

Discussion about possibility of having a post-doc give a research talk, or
invite a panel or person to speak about what s like searching for a
post-doc.

Tom Sharpton: s use MSG as a resource to the community of microbiology
students, beyond practice talks and the symposium. Are there other
services we can provide?

Matt Melnicki & Tom Sharpton: discussion about how to make things public
vs. private (regarding the content of the meetings, including talks).  The
best situation is probably that Matt Melnicki gives a disclaimer at the
beginning of every meeting that s on the books (since MM is
taking notes, which TS want to put on the web page and Nhu Nguyen will
email out to the rest of the MSG list (not the whole micro grad group,
though)).

Matt Melnicki: I was upset when I was a first year and I t figure out
until the symposium that MSG existed, since m in the Ag.Chem graduate
group.  Please try and make sure everyone beyond the official Micro grad
group knows that the graduate group exists (For instance, people in plant
labs in PMB that might study microbes, people in other departments that
study microbes).
