The fungal ML5/ML6 region of the mitochondrial ribosomal large subunit was sequenced directly from a single orchid sample. The resulting sequence was aligned with sequences from a database of Basidiomycetous mycorrhizal fungi constructed in our lab (Bruns et. al in prep). A heuristic search was performed using the program PAUP. The backbone of the tree was constrained to that found previously to be the most parsimonious tree. The unknown symbiont was added to the analysis and this single most parsimonious tree resulted.
